Hello Bunsuke! Thank you for another great translation and post ! I have a question: How do I know when to pronounce "時" as "とき" vs "じ"? And what is the difference between these two ? Thank you in advance :)

Hi Phuykong, thanks for your question! Actually, this is quite a difficult one. You may also pronounce this as どき here, as well (so, はっかくどき). I think both are correct. However, the reading とき is only used when the word appears on its own (発覚の時 = はっかくのとき). In all of these cases, the word simply means 'when'. But in other contexts, of course, 時 may also refer to a specific hour (今は8時間になった) or time in general (急いでいるから時間がない).
