Using ’もの’ to refer to your family feels weird. In grammar resources for beginners, it's always taught that 物 is used to indicate inanimate "things" and 事 for animate "things".

物 means things but 者 means people. both are read as もの. this もの definitely refers to the latter.

Just a beginner, but I think maybe because the character here doesn't like his/her family that much? Another possible reason is 者 also reads mono, meaning person.
