真昼の暑さを取り戻してゆくのがわかった。

I reread this sentence again and again. Can’t find an explanation to why it had to 暑さ「を」取り戻す instead of 「が」。

わかるcomes with が, 暑さ is something that handles on its own, thus が as well?

Hi Rin, great question!

取り戻す is a transative verb and 暑さ is the grammatical object. So you get 真昼の暑さを取り戻してゆく, meaning something like "we are regaining the heat of midday". That entire sentence in nomilized by の (you could even replace の with こと here). So then you get something like "the fact that we are regaining the heat of midday". The final verb 分かる comments on this entire sentence. "You can sense the fact that we are regaining the heat of midday". In short, the を is there because it indicates that 暑さ is the object of 取り戻す; が is there because the entire nominalized sentence forms the grammtical subject of the verb 分かる.

Does this make sense?
