This is probably a good place to ask something I have been curious about. Are there any rules to name pronunciations in Japanese? Can you tell if name kanji uses kunyomi or onyomi. Is it just easier for Japanese people who are exposed to these names more regularly to figure out how a name is pronounced when reading it?
Hi I Mah, yes place names and people's names are always tricky. In this case, I think most of the place names are part of daily vocabulary in some way or another: 讃岐 is famous because of 讃岐うどん, 阿波 because of 阿波踊り, and 土佐 and 伊予 are both historically significant, so most people will know about them and will therefore have no trouble reading them. But if the locations are more obscure, then most people will venture a guess based on the most logical readings of those characters. In the end, both with place names and people's names, you're never really sure unless you ask. They even have so-called 検定 for 難読地名 and 難読駅名.
