At one of my favorite izakaya in Tokyo. The umeshu here will change your life and the food is also very good.

この日も、また寒い日でありました。百姓は、たびたび入った居酒屋の前を通りかかると、つい金を持っているので、一杯やろうという気持になりました。彼は、居酒屋ののれんをくぐって、ベンチに腰をかけました。そして、そこにきあわしている人たちを相手にしながら酒を飲みました。しまいには、舌が自由にまわらないほど、酔ってしまいました。

• のれん　　　　　　　　shop curtain

  • In kanji this would be 暖簾.

• くぐる　　　　　　　　to pass through (usually a door or a gate)

• きあわす　　　　　　　to happen to be there

  • Written in kanji this would be 来合わす.

• 舌　　　した　　　　　tongue

• 酔う　　よう　　　　　to become drunk/intoxicated

Translation:

That day, too, it was a cold day again. Because the farmer happened to have some cash on hand when he passed by a tavern he frequented, he felt like having a drink. He passed through the shop curtain and sat down on a bench. There, he drank while chatting with the other people that were sitting there. In the end, he became so drunk, he started to slur his words.
