For our fourth project, I wanted to read Mori Ogai’s short narrative Dengaku dofu (1912) together. The story itself isn’t very difficult (it’s quite a bit easier than Tamura’s short story from project II), but there are a few hurdles, the main one being that it has prewar kana. This might take some getting used to, but I’ll try my best to guide you through it. Perhaps we can even do a collective Zoom call in which we read together. Let me know if you’d be interested in a live call in the comment section below. The good news: the publisher added a bunch of furigana and some additional notes at the bottom of the page to help with reading comprehension.
The immersion reading project will run for six days: Tuesday 1 March - Sunday 6 March. If you are interested in a call, we’ll most likely do it on one of the weekend days.
The story is 12 pages long. This works out to 2 pages per day. The pace is just an indication, so please don’t feel rushed. You can join at your own tempo, post late, it doesn’t matter. We’re all here to support each other’s progress. Please use the link below to download the pdf file.
At the end of each day (9 pm Amsterdam time), I’ll post a discussion thread. Everyone is encouraged to read along, join the discussions, and post questions to the daily threads. The threads will stay open so that you can respond at a time that is convenient for you, but ideally, the bulk of the group discussion will take place within the 24 hours before next day’s discussion.
Hopefully many of you will be able to join the project. Just give it a shot, what have you got to lose? I look forward to your reading all your comments :)
Hello, I'm interested to by the immersion reading project. I may be busy until 3rd but I can read more from then. Why not the call! On Sunday if I understood well 🤔?
Awesome ! I would have loved to join you guys on a call, but I'll be travelling during that time... I will definitely read the story, though, and post questions and comments as usual. 頑張りましょう!
I'll also join and I would be interested in a call. Might be too hard for me still, but together is fun. Now I'm struggling on my own with the book you might know,海 by 小川 洋子, but it is so difficult, the thin book attracted me, though. So a short reading project together shall be fun.
Thank you for your reply and again for this great project and for your willingness to help. Might ask you some questions later, when I explored the book a bit more. Just started. Look forward to join.
Miss the dailies, are you bringing'em back?
I'll do a few here and there, but no longer every day. But I'm glad you enjoy them :)
I'll join and I would be interested in a call
Great!! Let's make it happen :)
Nice idea! I would like to join too c:
Great! Looking forward to your comments :)

Hi Koppa, glad you're able to join! No worries, we'll get through it together. 小川洋子 can be tough! I haven't read 海 yet, so maybe I can take a look :)
