Grammar:

1. ともすれば

   This pattern is sometimes hard to translate, but it means something like “depending on the situation, there is a tendency/likelihood for […] to occur.” In this case, it stresses the possibility of an early death.

Translation:

That was the diagnosis the doctor gave me. I had six months to live at most, and it was even uncertain whether I would still be around a week later. Radiation therapy, anticancer drug treatment, terminal care, the doctor suggested several options. But none of it registered.
