#282 国木田独歩「武蔵野」
ともかく、画や歌でばかり想像している武蔵野をその俤ばかりでも見たいものとは自分ばかりの願いではあるまい。それほどの武蔵野が今ははたしていかがであるか、自分は詳わしくこの問に答えて自分を満足させたいとの望みを起こしたことはじつに一年前の事であって、今はますますこの望みが大きくなってきた。

Translation:
In any case, it is not my aim to look for the old vestiges of the Musashi plain as they are imagined in paintings and poetry from the past. I want to find a thorough answer to the question what the Musashi plain, that has been the source of so much artistic expression, looks like today, just for my own satisfaction. This urge struck me about a year ago and now this feeling has gotten even stronger.
