In this section: 夏休みだというのに実家にも戻らず, I don't understand what purpose do the だ and にも serve? I guess they are particles. に for location, も for "as well". But I don't really understand them here.
だ here simply means 'is', 'even though it is the summer holiday'. Leaving it out would be the equivalent of saying 'even though summer holiday' in English.
The nuance of the にも is 'not even', as in 'going home for the holidays is the least a normal person should do and she hasn't even done that'. Even though there is an expectation of the sister to return home for the holidays - as is normal - she hasn't even done that.
