五月のしまいの日曜でした。わたくしは賑やかな市の教会の鐘の音で眼をさましました。もう日はよほど登って、まわりはみんなきらきらしていました。時計を見るとちょうど六時でした。わたくしはすぐチョッキだけ着て山羊を見に行きました。すると小屋のなかはしんとして藁が凹んでいるだけで、あのみじかい角も白い髯も見えませんでした。

Translation:

It was the last Sunday of May. I woke up to the sound of the lively city’s church bells. Everything around me was glittering in the sun, which had been up for a while already. When I looked at the clock it was exactly 6 o’clock. I immediately put on my waistcoat and went to see the goat. But when I arrived there, the shed was empty and all I could see was the dented straw, but those tiny horns and white goatee were nowhere to be found.
