あわれや宗山。見る内に、額にたらたらと衝と汗を流し、死声を振絞ると、頤から胸へ膏を絞った……あのその大きな唇が海鼠を干したように乾いて来て、舌が硬って呼吸が発奮む。

Translation:
Poor Sozan. He squeezed out a strangled voice and sweat quickly started dripping from his forehead, drenching him in his own grease from his chin to his chest. His big lips were parched like dried sea slugs, his tongue hardened and his breathing was heavy.

I like the first や, is similar to たり for verbs. A diffuser, softener. I don't think 宗山 makes it to the end of the book.

2. is 流し ren'yokei? used on its own it can be kind of like -te form to link verbs?
3. (海鼠を干した)ように - like (sea slugs that were dried)
4. 乾いて来る - become parched (~て来る shows a continued change in state)
