寺へかえると匆々、私が金閣の前へ急いだのはふしぎではない。参観路の砂利は真夏の光りに灼け、私の運動靴の粗悪なゴム裏は、石のひとつひとつに粘ついた。

Translation:

It was no wonder that I hurried toward the Golden Pavilion as soon as I returned to the temple. The gravel on the visitor’s path had become so hot in the midsummer sunlight that the cheap rubber soles of my athletic shoes stuck to each and every stone.
