#156 若杉鳥子「ある遊郭での出来事」
ある晩、F楼の亭主が隣家のH楼の電話を借りにいった。
Fにも電話があるのに自分の処へ借りに来たものだから、H楼の亭主は何事かと思って、
『お宅の電話は、どうかしましたか?』
と訊いた。
『ナニ、警察へちょっと……野郎感づくと遁がしちまうから……』
Vocabulary:
若杉鳥子 わかすぎとりこ Wakasugi Toriko (author, 1892-1937)
楼 ろう building
亭主 ていしゅ owner, master, head of household
隣家 りんか the house next door, a neighboring house
処 ところ place
遁がす のがす to let [someone] get away
Translation:
One night, the master of building F went to his next door neighbor in building H to borrow the phone.
F also had a phone, so the master of building H was confused as to why he came to borrow his, and asked: “Is there something wrong with your phone?”
“What, I just need to quickly call the police…if the bastard notices, he’ll get away.”

Recording grammar:
(F[にも]電話がある)のに - (F [also] had a phone) so
(野郎感づく)と(遁がしちまう) here the と is conditional, (遁がしちまう) is consequence of (野郎感づく)
警察へちょっと… relies on context - briefly {to make a call} to the police
わかすぎs【若 || 杉椙】
kanjis w/ わか.い readings I found three:『若』young,『夭』early death, 『嫩』weakly young
Easy to see why the latter ones aren't used for names.
As for the cedar tree its wood is very 'splintery' and its abundant pollen discharge makes the air 'bright':
『杉』『椙』
•
『遁』トン、のが.れる、のが.す
『go || shield』 or 『leave || protection』
s/t like 'evasion' probably. It's an oldie, but a goodie; some fun ninja vocabulary w/ this kanji: 隠遁術、水遁の術…
•
どうかして
in some way, by some chance
どうかした
is s/t wrong?
