小路の両側には寝静まった家々が錯雑して建っていた。まだ灯しているとみえた小窓は、遠い街燈の明りを反射しているのにすぎなかった。

Translation:

On both sides of the alley, sleepy houses stood chaotically clustered together. The small windows that still seemed to be lit only reflected the glow of the distant street lights.
