#148　夏目漱石『三四郎』

三四郎は急に気をかえて、別の世界のことを思い出した。――これから東京に行く。大学にはいる。有名な学者に接触する。趣味品性の備わった学生と交際する。図書館で研究をする。著作をやる。世間で喝采する。母がうれしがる。というような未来をだらしなく考えて、大いに元気を回復してみると、べつに二十三ページのなかに顔を埋めている必要がなくなった。そこでひょいと頭を上げた。すると筋向こうにいたさっきの男がまた三四郎の方を見ていた。今度は三四郎のほうでもこの男を見返した。

Translation:

Sanshiro shook it off and let his mind wander to a different place. ――He was on his way to Tokyo and about to enter university. He was going to rub shoulders with famous scholars and socialize with students of good taste and character. He was going to study in the library and write books. The world was going to cheer him on, making his mother overjoyed. He casually pictured his future in this way and was starting to feel better, and the need to bury his face in page twenty-three of his book seemed to disappear. Sanshiro lifted his head up for a moment, when he noticed that the man from before sitting diagonally opposite him was looking in his direction again. This time, Sanshiro looked back at him.
