Translation:
I moved into this wooden two-story house in October of 1979. Because someone was willing to let me borrow the land as a favor, and a friend who is an architect said he would build the house without regard for his own margins, I thought this was the chance of a lifetime, and so before these people changed their minds I took out several loans, but right as we were starting construction I contracted pulmonary tuberculosis and was forced to check into hospital.

The second sentence murdered me. I don't think I'm going to recover.
羽目となる was quite hard to understand, I had never seen it before. What's even the logic in becoming a panel = getting into an awkward situation!?
