I was going through some old pictures that I took during my time in Japan, and wanted to share a few of them with you today. They give a bit of a romanticized image of Japan, but I’m feeling nostalgic so you’ll have to forgive me. Hope you enjoy!
The view from 竜飛岬 (Cape Tappi), at the most northern tip of Honshu. You can see Hokkaido from here on a clear day.
The old house of author Dazai Osamu. This space used to be a part of the famous 斜陽館, Dazai’s parental home that is now open to the public. This separation wasn’t open to the public when we visited, but through a chance encounter we were able to persuade the caretaker to give us a tour of the house. He even let us sit at this table, where Dazai wrote many of his famous novels.
One autumn day at 箕面公園. I don’t know the person in this picture, but I like the way it turned out.
Spring in full swing at the 万博記念公園 in Osaka. This was one of the last days of sakura, and as it was a weekend, large crowds gathered under the trees to enjoy hanami.
A different side of the 平等院 in Uji. The front of this temple is displayed on the 10 Yen coin.
Pudding made with the steam of the hot springs of Beppu. Very delicious.
Aburasoba in Tokyo, one of my favorite gluttonous midnight snacks.
Some of the smaller temples around Hiraizumi in Northern Japan. This is one of the locations in Matsuo Basho’s『奥の細道』.
お巫女さん, getting ready (盛岡八幡宮).
Busy lunch service at one of the larger udon chain stores (丸亀製麵). You can find these all around Japan.
A temple in Arita, a small town in Kyushu with a rich tradition of porcelain production. This temple is special for two reasons. Not only are some of the torii made with porcelain, but the entrance of the temple has a train running through it! Watch your step when you visit.
Japan produces some of the best beers in the world. Here is one of my favorites: Minoh beer, produced in Osaka prefecture.
The cave in which the sun goddess Amaterasu hid herself from her brother Susano. If you know the story of the Kojiki, you’ll appreciate the symbolism of the pregnant cat pointing the way to this small but impressive shrine.
At my favorite sushi restaurant in Tokyo, somewhere around Tsukiji.
At one of the best izakaya in Tokyo…one of the things I miss most about Japan is the food culture.
Very beautiful photo's, makes me want to jump in a plane and go to Japan once again. Also love the additional information.
Beautiful photos and I love the details you shared around each one!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing these!
