Tsugiko had a disheartened expression on her face.
‘So there’s absolutely no hope of becoming happy for someone like me.’
Onobu had to say something. But she couldn’t say anything on the spot. Finally, all of a sudden the words spontaneously surged from her mouth in an excited and pressing manner.
‘There is, there is. You just have to love them, and make them love you in return. As long as you do that, there are plenty of chances to become happy.’

Funny (?) story, the first time I heard about this novel was through Mizumura's completion, but anyway. Quick question, why is 調子 here the subject of the sentence? Thanks!
It was a dark time when 云う was used instead of 言う.
