One spring, I traveled around the Tsugaru Peninsula at the northern tip of Honshū for about three weeks for the first time. This was, in my life of thirty-something years, a very important event. I was born in Tsugaru, and while I grew up there for twenty years, I had only seen the towns of Kanagi, Goshogawara, Aomori, Hirosaki, Asamushi, and Ōwani, but had absolutely no knowledge of the other towns and villages.
