#49 柴田翔「されど われらが日々――」
ある冷たい雨の降る秋の夕方、私は郊外のK駅のそばの古本屋に寄った。それはその月の最後のアルバイトの帰りであった。
Vocabulary:
柴田翔 しばたしょう Shibata Sho (author, 1935-)
冷たい つめたい cold (to the touch)
雨 あめ rain
降る ふる to fall (rain, snow, etc.)
秋 あき fall, autumn
夕方 ゆうがた evening
郊外 こうがい the suburbs
駅 えき train station
古本屋 ふるほんや secondhand bookshop
寄る よる to go by (a place)
最後 さいご last
帰り かえり (on) the way home
Note:
冷たい
This adjective qualifies 雨 (rain), not 夕方 (evening). But because “one autumn evening on which cold rain was falling” sounds clumsy, I changed the logistics of the sentence to make the translation sound more natural.
Translation:
One cold, rainy autumn evening, I went by the secondhand bookshop next to K. station in the suburbs. I was on my way home from my last shift of the month at my part-time job.
