Translation:
It snowed on the last day of the year. It started snowing in the morning and by the time the boat arrived in Osaka it was falling in gentle, heavy flakes. It even continued to snow in the evening.
Usually it snowed twice a year at the most, and not before the cold season arrived, as this is a warm region. This is a rare sight, the innkeeper at the hot spring told the guests. Even Nagarekawa Street, with its heavy traffic, had an inch of snow. Those poor open-air merchants working on a night like this, she said, rubbing her red hands together. All the guests were of a certain standing, spending New Year’s Eve at a hot spring inn. If only it would stop snowing, the young innkeeper thought to herself, peeking out at Nagarekawa Street from the reception desk window as she showed the guests to the bath, missing her chance to buy a calendar for the next year.
