むかしの静かさは、どの程度の深さであったか。われわれの今の耳はどの程度、鈍くなっているか、静寂を聞き取れなくなっているのか、と私はいつでも考えかけて、比較する対象を引き寄せられなくて止む。

Translation:
How deep was quietness in the past? How muted have our modern ears become, no longer able to perceive stillness? Whenever these thoughts begin to enter into my mind, they cease as I cannot draw on any object for comparison.
