津軽には、葛西善蔵、太宰治、という所謂「破滅型」の系譜があるといわれている。もちろんわたしは、葛西の真剣さも、太宰の天才も持ち合せておらず、才能も徳もともに乏しいただの物書きにすぎないけれども、いつのころからか、オレもどうやらハメツ型なのではあるまいか、という一種の固定観念ないしは強迫観念にとらわれているのを感じていた。

Translation:

It is said that Tsugaru is home to a lineage of so-called ‘destructive types’, such as Kasai Zenzo and Dazai Osamu. Of course, I do not possess the seriousness of Kasai, nor the genius of Dazai, as I am but a humble writer without much talent or virtue, but, I cannot recall when it started exactly, I felt that I was captivated by the idea, by the obsession, that I too was somehow a destructive type.
