Translation:
A long, long time ago, there was a terrible outbreak of mice plaguing the city of Kyoto. Not only did they steal food from kitchens and cupboards, but they gnawed into sliding doors, made holes in dressers ripping clothes to shreds with their teeth, and they ran around above the ceiling and in the corners of the tatami rooms, making mischief to their heart’s content.
