Vocabulary:
Tayama Katai (author, 1872-1930)
Translation:
Their letters were filled with emotions. Regardless of how you looked at it, their relationship was unusual. He had a wife, a child, a reputation, and they had a teacher-student relationship, and so he was cautious not to fall madly in love, but hidden beneath their roaring hearts and the lights in their eyes lurked indeed a raging storm.
Link for the text I used:
師弟 teacher and student.

I dont quite get the use of あれば for a not hypothetical case, but I suppose it stresses 師弟 relationship as to why not to fall in love.
ない is a common structure.
