客を引く女が四五人、白粉の禿げた顔を震わせながら、例の横町の壁に倚りかかって居た。屈折した街燈の光の中で、立てかけた土管の影が黙々と囚人達の横に並んで居た。

Translation:

Four or five women looking for customers, their faces with faded makeup trembling, were leaning against the wall of their usual alleyway. The shadows of the earthen pipes fell silently alongside the prisoners in the distorted light of the street lantern.
