日本人が外国の言葉を日本語になじませようとした時、最も効果的だったのは、振り仮名という表記システムだった。このことは、誰も異論のないところだろう。江戸晩期から明治初期にかけて、次に効果的なのは、「割注」という注釈法だった。

Translation:

When the Japanese attempted to reconcile foreign languages with the Japanese language, the most effective method was the furigana notation system. It is unlikely that anyone will dispute this fact. The second most effective method was the annotation system called ‘inserted annotation,’ which was used from the late Edo to the early Meiji period.
