夏の終りのある日、彼はバルコニーに出て、デッキ・チェアに身を沈めていた。黄昏の気配が空気の中にしのび込み、淡い水色の空の彼方は徐々に夜に吞み込まれようとして微かに震えている。
One late summer day, he went out on the balcony and sank his body into a deck chair. Signs of twilight crept into the air, and the pale water-colored sky in the distance was trembling faintly as it was slowly engulfed by the night.

I have problems understanding 「夜に吞み込まれようとして」, because the sky is not “trying” to do something, right?
