#14 林京子「長い時間をかけた人間の経験」
花も咲けばやがては散りますねえ、と満開の桜の下で、詠嘆した先輩がいた。十七、八歳のおとめだった私も、さすがに笑い出しそうになったが、そうですね、とたわわな花のトンネルを見上げて答えた。半世紀も昔の話である。しかし、生きてみて、これ以上の本当の話は世の中にはない。あまりにも当たり前すぎると笑いたくなるのだが、後で、事の深さに気付いて愕然とする。
“Flowers wither as soon as they bloom,” exclaimed a senior, admiring the cherry blossom in full bloom. Naturally, being a young girl of about 17 or 18 years old, I nearly burst into laughter, but replied “they really do,” looking up at the tunnel of flowers weighing down the branches. This happened half a century ago. But, having lived my life, I can say that there is nothing more true in this world. It might be so obvious that you want to laugh, but later on, I was shocked to realize how profound this statement was.

Grammar:
花も咲けばやがては散ります
Literally means ‘flowers bloom and before long they wither’, but may also be understood as metaphor for the fleeting nature of our existence. This statement is overly sentimental, prompting the female protagonist to laugh.
笑い出しそうになった
The pattern ~そうになる follows the ren’yokei form of verbs and means ‘to be on the verge of…’ or ‘to nearly…’.
