#12　宮沢賢治「注文の多い料理店」

二人の若い紳士が、すっかりイギリスの兵隊のかたちをして、ぴかぴかする鉄砲をかついで、白熊のような犬を二疋つれて、だいぶ山奥の、木の葉のかさかさしたとこをこんなことを云いながら、あるいておりました。

Two young gentlemen dressed completely as British soldiers, carrying shiny rifles and accompanied by two dogs like polar bears, were strolling through the rustling leaves deep in the mountains when they said the following.

Grammar:

1. あるいておりました

   Notice the usage of the humble form おります here. The effect is that the narrator positions himself on the level of the two gentlemen, evoking a sense of empathy with their fate.
